What is Reflexology ?

Reflexology is the ancient practice of applying gentle pressure to the reflex points on the feet and hands to stimulate the body’s own healing system.

It is derived from techniques dating back at least 5000 years to when the Chinese practised a form of pressure therapy on the feet, and from ancient tomb drawings we can see that the ancient Egyptians were also using similar techniques around 3000BC. However it was not until 1913 that a Dr Fitzgerald formed these techniques into a method of healing which he termed Zone Therapy, and it is from this that Reflexology as we know it today developed.

Working on the principle that the entire human body is inter-connected, and that areas of the feet mirror specific areas of the body, the feet are massaged in a very particular way. It is believed that the body’s organs, structure and functioning is positively affected, bringing the whole body back into balance.

Clinical Reflexology is aimed at improving your health. During a treatment over 7000 nerves in the feet are stimulated, which has an effect on the whole body, especially the nervous and circulatory systems.

Can Reflexology Help Me ?

Many people find a general sense of improved health and well being, beneficial effects being felt on all levels, physical, mental and emotional, and can help to bring relief from a wide range of conditions.

Some problems that have been reported to respond well to Reflexology include

  • Relief from stress, anxiety and tension.
  • Hormonal Problems, including mood swings, pre menstrual symptoms, and fertility issues.
  • Poor sleep and mood patterns.
  • Circulatory problems.
  • Low Energy.

Apart from a few exceptions Reflexology is suitable for most people.

What does a treatment involve ?

A Reflexology Treatment usually lasts around an hour, apart from the first visit, which is usually a little longer due to a full consultation taking place.

During the treatment you can remain fully clothed apart from the need to remove your shoes and socks. You may lie on a massage couch, or, if prefered sit in a chair, you will be proped with pillows and covered with blankets to make sure you are comfortable. Using organic foot balms or powders the treatment begins with a foot massage, followed by work on your feet and ankles, using a variety of reflexology techniques to suit your own individual needs.

reflexologyIt is usual to have a short course of treatment to enable your body to gain maximum and lasting benefits, and many clients continue to have regular treatments for relaxation and as a preventitive measure, in order to keep their overall sense of health and well-being, however you should find even just one treatment beneficial and it should bring you a wonderful sense of relaxation.

Most people find the treatment very enjoyable and extremely relaxing with clients often falling asleep.

Described by one of my clients:

“After starting a new job I was experiencing severe regular spasmodic pain in my arm and shoulder. I had seen the doctor and been refered to the hospital for tests, but the pain remained. I took a course in Reflexology at the Bowen House with Susan and experienced miraculous, immediate improvement.

Susan could recreate the spasmodic painful feelings in my arm by working on my feet – how is that possible? The pain then subsided when the treatment stopped. I had three sessions and my arm now feels normal again with no pain remaining, it was incredible. Thank you”
